FAQ’s

What follows is a list of Frequently Asked Questions – questions which I have been asked by my clients during the course of my career as a Wedding Photographer. I hope these will be of some benefit to you, however, if you have a specific question which is not answered here, please don’t hesitate to contact me and I will gladly assist you in any way possible

Are you a member of the SAPP (SA Professional Photographers)?

Yes, I am – in the Wedding and Theatre/Dance categories.

What other affiliations do you hold?

Since December 2010 I have been a member of the WPJA (Wedding Photojournalist Association). It is an internationally-run organisation with its membership criteria centered on Wedding Photojournalism. From the WPJA’s site:

The Wedding Photojournalist Association puts the world’s best wedding photography at your fingertips. We offer a new perspective on wedding photography – quietly capturing the real moments as they happen for the bride and groom. It is our goal to use photography to tell the story of your wedding day, not dictate it for you.

I am also a member of the International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers (ISPWP) which is also an international organisation.

What do you wear?

I dress in black trousers and a smart black shirt. I don’t like to stand out in the crowd in loud clothing. I wear flat shoes, which don’t add to my 5ft frame and which don’t squeak when I am creeping around trying to remain discreet.

What equipment do you use?

I shoot on the Nikon System. I have two D4 Professional Cameras as well as a D7000, which I use as a back-up. My cameras are geared to shoot in low light conditions without having to use flash, and, in this respect, I make use of natural light only all through the preparation shots, ceremony and right up until the start of the reception. I have a range of professional zoom and fixed-focal length lenses which suit a variety of applications depending on what I am shooting at any particular time. I also use 3 flashes with external battery packs (I have a heap of batteries). And a heap of memory cards. I am extremely well-equipped!

How do I secure a booking for my date?

On signature of my Wedding Agreement (which is presented to you at our initial meeting), you will have five working days to furnish a 50%retainer of the base package chosen. The balance of payment is due within three days prior to the Wedding Day, itself.

How long is your coverage time at our Wedding?

Coverage lasts 8 hours over the course of your Wedding Day. I start shooting two hours before the ceremony (to capture Bridal Preparations – and those of the Groom, if desired) and end when all the formalities are completed at the reception (usually when the garter is tossed). Shorter packages may be negotiated.

How much time should we allow for photos of ourselves on the Wedding Day?

I would say that an hour and a half for both photos of the family (groups photos) as well as photos of you and your spouse alone together as long as you limit your family photos to a maximum of 10. Generally, a minimum of 45mins to an hour for your photos alone together is perfect provided that there is not too much walking involved from location to location (Tip: Brides – bring flat comfortable shoes for this part!)

Do you work overtime if we require it?

I am happy to work over the 8 hour time frame, but overtime rates apply.

Do you require a meal?

Yes please! If this is not possible, please let me know beforehand so that an alternative arrangement may be made.

What is the best time to have my Wedding Ceremony?

In Summer, when the sun sets later, 4pm is fine (obviously this also depends on the length of your ceremony). However, during the Winter months, you should look at scheduling your ceremony at 3pm so that we have enough available light for your photography session later on.

Our Wedding is outside of Johannesburg…how do travel costs work?

All my packages include 100km worth of mileage from Jhb (this usually gets me to and home from Pta central). Anything over and above that is charged out at R4/km.

Our Wedding is in another Town/City altogether….do you travel that far?

Yes, I do photograph Weddings outside of Gauteng, however my packages do not factor in travel costs – flights/car hire etc (although if it is within driving distance, the 100km does still apply) or the cost of accommodation for the night.

Do you digitally edit our images?

Yes, but I don’t do extensive digital manipulation. As a member of the WPJA (Wedding Photojournalist Association), I am not permitted to edit further than sharpening, basic contrast and colour enhancements as well as conversions to black and white. This is owing to their subscription to the essence of Wedding Photojournalism. To read more about the organisation, click here

Would you be prepared to give us ALL the images taken on our Wedding Day?

No. I believe in quality over quantity and deliver only the best images of the day. This is in my own professional interests. Should you wish to discuss the reasons for this, please feel free to contact me.

What does the Storybook Album look like?

This depends on the package chosen – there is a variety of types of Album from which you may choose. The Album is bound in a Brown or Black Genuine Leather Cover and printed on Matt (lustre) Photographic board-mounted Paper.

How many images does the Album take?

From the edited images, approximately 80 images make it into your Storybook Album. The reason for this is that, rather than cramming in as many as I can, I prefer to make the Album a showpiece of the best/your favourite images of the day. In certain cases you will find that there are instances where only one image takes up an entire page (thus placing emphasis on it).

How does the Album process work?

Generally, once you have received your final dvd, I will prepare a ‘mock’ draft of an album for you to look at. The draft will be uploaded to a secure private internet account. You may then make as many changes to that draft as you wish until you are 100% satisfied with the final product. Once you have signed off on the final draft, it will be sent to the printers, where you can expect a three week turnaround time before your book is ready for collection.

Should you have any further questions or require any additional information, please don’t hesitate to contact me on 082 926 0404 or via the Contact Page on this site. Most of the rest of the answers will be dealt with in the terms and conditions of the Wedding Agreement which will be discussed at our initial meeting.
